Castles
State museums Muiderslot and Slot Loevestein are two atmospheric castles with a rich history. With their moats, ramparts and bulwarks, the two defences were part of both the Old and New Dutch Waterlines. The Muiderslot is also still part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Come along and enjoy a unique day out!
Rijksmuseum Muiderslot
On the former Zuiderzee, in the medieval fortified town of Muiden, stands the Rijksmuseum Muiderslot. Many places in and around the castle are still decorated exactly as they used to be and there are many fun activities and guided tours for young and old. Outside the castle, you'll find the Waterschild. This place offers a presentation of seven centuries of protection by water at the Muiderslot.

Where the rivers Maas and Waal meet and Gelderland, Brabant and South Holland meet you will find Loevestein Castle. This castle was once a state prison from which legal scholar and writer Hugo de Groot managed to escape in a book chest. Later, together with Fort Vuren and the fortified towns of Gorinchem and Woudrichem, the castle formed the capstone of the Dutch Water Defence Lines. A casemate within the castle's walls still recalls those days. Today, Slot Loevestein is an ideal day out. In the castle, the outer castle and the soldiers’ village, there is plenty for everyone to do.
